Speech of Minister Pekkarinen at the Enterprise Awards ceremony

08 Dec 2006, 12:24 en

Dear Vice-President Verheugen,Dear president Delabarre,Dear European Enterprise Awards Nominees,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Knowledge, Research & Development, technology and innovations are key words in modern economy. Entrepreneurship and a good business environment are decisive in transforming those innovations to products, services, enterprises and jobs.

Europe needs more entrepreneurship and enterprises. Treshold to start an enterprise is often much too high. Fear of failure is too big. Carrots for growth of SMEs are too modest.

In these factors I believe we all have a lot of room for improvement in Europe.

In different regions in Europe, however, we find excellent examples of success. We have found good examples how various regions and different enterprises, societies or networks have succeeded in waking up and encouraging entrepreneurship. They have constructed good ground for entrepreneurship and deployment of innovations.

We find also interesting enterprises, which have opened the way for other enterprises in this path.

The best ones of these good examples of promoting entrepreneurship have now been raised up in this European Enterprise Award contest. Indeed, we need these examples of enthusiasm.

Finland has made innovations as a top priority and a central theme of our European Presidency this Autumn. We welcome the strong efforts of the Commission in building the broad-based innovation strategy and helping enterprises to benefit of innovations.

This Award is a very useful tool in promoting these objectives in the Union and other European Countries taking part in this contest. I hope that this Award as institution will help the public authorities and enterprises to understand better the needs of entrepreneurship.

The Finnish Presidency wishes to thank the organisers, the European Commission and the Committee of Regions for their excellent work and efficient co-operation. We would also like to express our gratitude to the high-level Jury for their work in selecting the best policy initiatives.

On behalf of the Finnish Presidency, allow me to congratulate the winners who will be announced soon, and thank them for their valuable efforts! You are just what Europe needs. We all wish You the best of success in your future work.

Thank you.
