EU and Russia to launch dialogue on the environment

Environmental co-operation between the EU and Russia will be launched on a new footing at the first meeting of the EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council, which will take place in Helsinki on 9-10 October 2006. Participants in this meeting presided by the Minister of the Environment Jan-Erik Enestam will be the Russian Minister of Natural Resources Yuri Trutnev, EU Commissioner for Environment Stavros Dimas and Secretary of State Matthias Machnig from the German Ministry of the Environment.
The purpose of the meeting is to adopt and sign the Terms of Reference of the environmental protection and nature conservation co-operation between the EU and Russia. This document will define the principles of the co-operation, its objectives and practical work by experts. The main themes of the meeting will be climate change, protecting biodiversity, and the environment and economic development.
Media programme 10 October
The meeting of the EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council will start with a dinner on 9 October. The actual meeting will take place in the House of the Estates (street address Snellmaninkatu 9-11) in Helsinki on Tuesday 10 October. Facilities will also be provided for the media in the House of the Estates.

- Press conference at 12.30 p.m.
The press conference will be attended by Minister of the Environment Mr Enestam, Russian Minister for Natural Resources Mr Trutnev, Commissioner for Environment Mr Dimas and the German Secretary of State Mr Machnig. The languages of the press conference will be English, Russian and German. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
