On Wednesday, 31 May, Minister of European Affairs Paula Lehtomäki unveiled the website and the visual image for Finland's EU Presidency in Helsinki. The website www.eu2006.fi will be the main channel of communication for the six-month Presidency. The site for the ASEM Summit www.asem6.fi is also part of the Presidency's overall web presence. Finland's six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union will begin on 1 July 2006.
The overall look and logo for the EU Presidency and the logo for the ASEM 6 Summit are the work of graphic designer Timo Kuoppala from the advertising agency Recommended Finland. An open competition was held for the designs. The visual image of both websites was designed by graphic designer Miika Puputti from the advertising agency Recommended Finland. Ch5 Finland Oy was responsible for the technical operation of the website.
Presidency web service
Finland’s EU Presidency web service will provide access to Presidency press releases and declarations, a meeting calendar and news. It will also offer information on Finland's Presidency and special information for media representatives. The site was created and will be maintained by the Presidency webteam, which forms part of the Government's Communications Unit. The site will be fed with information from all Ministries.
Though the user interface will be in English and French, the site will contain all available language versions of news items and other documents. As with the last Finnish Presidency, online information in Finnish and Swedish will be available from the www.eurooppa-tiedotus.fi site.
It is possible to subscribe to e-mail and SMS news services from the site, which also offers webcasts, particularly for briefings on the outcome of meetings. The Presidency pages also offer a picture archive consisting of print quality photos of the most important meetings, Finnish Government Ministers, and Finland in general.
The front page news, relating to the latest meetings and other events, will be continuously updated by the Presidency webteam. The Latin news-in-brief, introduced during Finland’s previous EU Presidency, will be published weekly.
The site for the ASEM 6 Summit in English at www.asem6.fi is also part of the Presidency’s overall web presence. Summit news, speeches and conclusions form be the core content of the site. It will also contain information on media events relating to the Summit, on ASEM generally and on previous summit meetings.
Presidency image and logo
The Presidency image will be used in, e.g., printed products, the Presidency website and audiovisual products. All Presidency meetings taking place in Finland will also match the look.
The visual designs for Finland's EU Presidency reflect the dynamic changes underway in the Union, and represent the way the values of the enlarged EU dovetail together to form a unified whole.
The design concept describes growth and development, a new direction forward, and the Finnish way of attending to matters in an open and direct manner. The logo draws inspiration from the lines and colours of the Nordic landscape. It depicts cooperation among the Member States of the European Union and their aspiration to debate and make decisions on matters of common interest.
The logo suggests the green of a burgeoning forest, the sweep of the horizon and the blue of water shimmering the sun. The contemporary feel to the point on the right-hand side symbolises progressive Finnish thinking and seems to point the way forwards. The transparency of the design conveys openness.
Logo for the ASEM 6 Summit
The ASEM 6 Summit at the level of Heads of State or Government, that will take place in Helsinki on 10 and 11 September 2006, has its own logo. It represents the cooperation process that brings together the EU Member States and the countries of East and Southeast Asia. The logo contains references to the East and the clean lines of the lotus blossom. Transparent colours are used to convey openness. The blue represents the European Union, the yellow Asia and the red the common objectives of the Summit. The centre of the logo features the Roman numeral X, to mark the tenth anniversary of the ASEM process.
