Foreign Minister Tuomioja: The European Union is against the death penalty

30 Dec 2006, 14:36 en fi

According to Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja the EU opposes the death penalty also in the case of Saddam Hussein who was executed this morning.

The European Union has always and consistently been against the use of capital punishment, also in this case, said Tuomioja on Saturday to STT (The Finnish News Agency).

Tuomioja also reminds that doubts were expressed about the impartiality of the trial.

There are certainly no doubts about the fact that Saddam Hussein was guilty of serious human rights violations and crimes against humanity, but that does not, as such justify the acceptance of the capital punishment.

Although the Foreign Minister considers the execution regrettable on principle, he does not find the result of the legal process surprising.

The process in Iraq has already lasted for some time and it was of course foreseeable that this is how it was wished to end.
