Helsinki, Finland’s capital and largest city, is situated in the south, on the Gulf of Finland. Helsinki was founded in 1550 and its current population is approximately 560,000. Helsinki and the neighbouring towns of Espoo and Vantaa form the metropolitan region which is now home to almost a million people.
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is located 20 km north of Helsinki. There are more than 120 international flights arriving every day. A journey from the airport to central Helsinki takes about 30-40 minutes. Buses run between the airport and central Helsinki every 10-20 minutes.

House of the Estates

The House of the Estates is located near Senate Square in Helsinki. The building serves as a venue for official Government meetings and other events. The House of the Estates, inaugurated in January 1891, was built for the three common estates as a location for meetings during the Assembly of the Representatives of the Estates. The House of the Estates is a ten-minute walk from the Helsinki main railway station. Tram number 7A has a stop close to the building.

Government Banquet Hall

The Government Banquet Hall is situated on the southern Esplanade in Helsinki, only two steps from Market Square. The building, designed by Carl Ludwig Engel and completed in 1822, was turned into the Government Banquet Hall in 1964. In addition to Government meetings, it is a venue for various kinds of receptions. The Government Banquet Hall is a ten-minute walk from the central railway station. Tram number 3B has a stop close to the building.

Helsinki Fair Centre

The Helsinki Fair Centre is Finland’s largest trade fair and conference venue that attracts more than a million visitors a year. It is situated about three kilometres north of central Helsinki. The Helsinki Fair Centre can be reached by train, tram or bus. All trains from Helsinki stop at the Pasila Station, 300 metres from the Fair Centre. Trams number 7A and 7B and bus number 17 stop nearby.

Finlandia Hall is the leading concert and congress centre in Helsinki. It is located in the centre of Helsinki overlooking Töölö Bay. The building was designed by an acclaimed Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto. It is a five-minute walk from the Helsinki main railway station. Trams 4, 7A, 7B and 10 stop in front of Finlandia Hall.

The Parliament Building, completed in 1931, is located in the heart of Helsinki. This year, as well as holding the EU Presidency, Finland is celebrating the Centenary of universal and equal suffrage. EU Presidency meetings will be held in the Parliament Building and in the annex building that was inaugurated in 2004. Trams 3T, 3B, 4, 7A, 7B and 10 stop near the Parliament Building.
